About the Information Systems Department
The Department of Information Systems was established in 1998 under the College of Business and offered a BSc degree in Business Information Systems. After the establishment of the College of Information Technology in 2003, the Department of Information Systems was moved from the College of Business to the College of Information Technology, and subsequently the program name was changed to BSc in Information Systems. The Information Systems disciplines centers around using ICT to efficiently and effectively enhance the performance of individuals and organizations in their work. Information Systems professionals will be involved in not only in designing and developing systems but also in understanding business processes and requirements to enhance and develop these systems. In addition, the students are equipped with knowledge to assist them to obtain professional certificates to enhance their employability and professional careers. The department partners with professionals from the industry to enrich the program and bridge the gap between academia and industry making it one of the leading IS programs in Bahrain and the region.
Currently, there are over 850 students in total in the department, and in addition to serving its sole program and the courses for the college of IT, the department offers general IT service courses to the undergraduate programs in the colleges of Business, Arts, Law, and the Department of Physical Education. It also offers a university-wide elective course in Educational Technology. Starting from 2017, the department also offers the Fundamentals of ICT course for the orientation program, which is taken by all students that enter this program prior to joining their respective colleges.

OUR FACULTY
The department of Information Systems has 28 qualified and well-experienced faculty members. 24 of the faculty are PhD holders and 4 MSc holders who handle the lecture classes for the courses. The PhD holders include 1 full rank professor, 3 associate professors, and 20 assistant professors. The MSc holders include one Senior Lecturer, one Lecturer, and two Research and Teaching Assistants. All ranked faculty members have obtained their degrees in different Information Systems related fields from reputable academic institutions globally such as those located in Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
Faculty specializations are diverse and many hold professional certifications in related IT and IS fields such as IT Governance (COBIT), Project Management (PMP), and Cloud Computing (AWS SAA), and Office Productivity (MOS).
In addition to their academic load, the faculty conduct research that is at a regional, and global level, participate in the administrative duties as well as community services. The faculty are involved in many students’ extracurricular activities such as supervising hackathons and competitions, as well as mentoring the students. Senior faculty teach specialized courses at a Master’s and PhD level for college’s own postgraduate courses and in specific IT-based advanced courses for other colleges. All PhD faculty supervise senior (capstone) projects in the undergraduate program, and several supervise MSc and PhD theses.
